The Wendell Senior Center has been successful in obtaining several very generous grants to help modify the facility and advance our operational efficiency. These grants have been awarded by the Community Development Division, Region IV, of the USDA, the Steele-Reese Foundation, the Walter and Leona Dufresne fund and the M. H. King Foundation through the Idaho Community Foundation. A summary of each grant follows:
Community Development Division, Region IV, USDA. This was a package of two grants and a loan which allowed the center to purchase the building it now uses at 380 1st Avenue East in Wendell, Idaho. The first grant was for $150,000 to cover administrative costs and provide the bulk of the purchase price for the facility. The second package included a $59,000 loan and a grant of $30,000 to be used to cover the remainder of the purchase price and to upgrade the building to meet ADA standards and make other improvements. The awards were made in 2016. Work is still in progress as of April 2017.
The Steele-Reese Foundation. This grant ($7,500) was to expand the availability of hot water to the center’s kitchen, purchase custodial equipment and supplies and modify a closet and two rooms into two rooms – one with hot/cold water to a mop sink and the other for equipment and supply storage. The project also included the installation of a heating and cooling unit in the food pantry room that will provide constant control of room temperature at 70 degrees Fahrenheit or below. This total project will be completed by the end of April 2017.
The Walter and Leona Dufresne fund. This $2,340 grant was to purchase and install a roll-down shutter for the serving window in the kitchen. The installation of this piece of equipment was completed on April 11, 2017 and will serve to minimize sound interference with meetings or visiting in the dining area during after-meal kitchen clean-up activity, enhance kitchen security during non-operation hours and improve sanitation.
M. H. King Foundation and the Idaho Community Foundation. The total granted from the two foundations was $2,500. These funds were used to purchase 120 padded folding chairs to be used for meetings at the center. This grant was awarded in 2015. Chairs were purchased early in 2016.
The staff and Board of Directors of the Wendell Senior Center express our deep gratitude to the donors and the administrators and Boards of Directors of the various foundations through which we have received these funds. Our current level of service and functions for improving circumstances for senior citizens and our community at-large would have been impossible without their generosity.
